Halla
Spirits
Nobody sensible builds a distillery in Finland.
We missed that memo.
Halla is the Finnish word for killing frost. Not the frost that makes things beautiful. The one that arrives overnight and changes all the living permanently.
In Finnish folk belief, halla was a force with will — moving across the land in darkness, making no distinction between what was planted with care and what grew wild. It came when it came. The ground after was different from the ground before.
We named this company after that. Not as a warning. As a description of where we work and what we think good spirits should do — arrive without announcement, change something, leave no room for indifference.
We make Nordic gin and rum with a clear proposition: good spirit, honest character, no decoration. The cold doesn't make it better. The dark doesn't make it poetic. The work is what it is.
Halla Spirits operates on a contract distilling model, working with licensed Finnish distilleries to produce spirits under our recipes and our name. Distributed through Alko and direct B2B to the hospitality trade. Export primary.

A Finnish dry gin built on Nordic botanicals — juniper, spruce tip, Finnish bog herbs. No citrus borrowed from somewhere warmer. No floral excess. Cold, dry, specific to this latitude.
Pot still rum finished in Nordic casks — ex-Finnish whisky barrels. Pot distillation puts it in the tier of the world's finest rums. The Nordic finish makes it ours. The premium rum category in Finland is unoccupied. That is the reason this company exists.
A Finnish herbal bitter from Nordic plants — yarrow, wormwood, sea buckthorn, lingonberry leaf. No Finnish competitors in this category. The strongest single opportunity we have.

Nobody said it would be easy.
Nobody said anything, actually.
We are building a craft distillery in Finland. This is what that looks like.
Licensed Finnish contract distilleries produce our spirits. Not a compromise — the only rational way to prove a product before committing capital to a still. Quality is controlled through recipe and testing, not by owning the equipment.
Finnish excise duty is the EU's highest. The domestic Alko channel is a brand anchor, not a profit centre. The business is built on export — UK, Germany, Scandinavia — where Finnish origin commands a premium and excise is the importer's concern.
A heritage industrial building from 1914 in Finland is the long-term production site — 810m² of timber and brick close to a river, heritage protected. Acquired after the contract model generates proof of concept and cash flow. The building can wait.
Finnish excise is fixed per unit of alcohol regardless of retail price. Every extra euro of shelf price yields ~€0.63 to the producer. Competing on price is structurally punishing. Premium positioning is both brand strategy and tax efficiency. There is no other viable model at small scale.
We know what we're building.
We're choosing where
carefully.
Halla Spirits is pre-production. We are currently selecting a partner distillery to manufacture our first batches to specification — the standard starting point for serious craft spirits brands, and we see no reason to pretend otherwise.
Finland is a structurally difficult market for spirits producers. The EU's highest excise duty, a state retail monopoly, and a legal ban on consumer marketing above 22% ABV make it one of the least hospitable environments in Europe for a craft spirits business. We are building here anyway, with full awareness of the obstacles. That is the entire point.

Work
with us.
Halla operates B2B. We supply restaurants, hotels, and hospitality groups in Finland and internationally. Export distribution enquiries welcome — UK, Germany, Scandinavia, and beyond. No retail, no direct-to-consumer.
